CHAPTER TWELVE

FABIOLA STOOD BY the library counter. She’d made it there only minutes before they closed for the day. If she could find out which records Italian family history researchers used to trace their roots, she’d be happy. She met the same helpful librarian she’d talked to before.

“The Italian civil government didn’t start keeping local records until the nineteenth century, so if you want to go further back, you need to look through the church records.” Silvia lifted her chin and pushed the pointed, dark-rimmed glasses up on her nose. “A few parishes began keeping records in the fourteenth century, but most places started two hundred years later. We also have books and archives containing family genealogies, military service records, old notary public documents, and declarations of inheritances and transfers of property.”

Fabiola leaned her elbows on the tall desk. “How about census records? I know the Norwegian registrations have information like profession, marital status, relationship to the head of the household, if they had bees or crops, their religion…things like that.”

Silvia shook her head. “Our census records are usually sparser, but you may find provinces that wrote down a few personal things about the people they counted. Maybe there’s more in the family status certificates, especially the records about people moving from one place to another.” She turned to check the clock on the wall behind the counter. “I’m afraid there’s no more time today. Could you come back tomorrow?”

“Of course. Thank you for the information.” Fabiola turned to leave.

“Wait a minute.”

“Yes.”

Silvia scanned the room. “Seems like you’re the only one left here. Perhaps if you tell me what you’re searching for, I can let you know if we have something worth spending your time on.”

Minutes later, they sat side by side at a large table covered with stacks of books, archive records, and binders. The librarian had locked the door and put up the closed sign.

“I’m not in a hurry tonight,” she said. “Family history is one of my hobbies, and I’m intrigued to see if we have anything to point you in the right direction.” She picked up an old book with a gilded crest on the front cover. “Let’s see, from what you’ve told me, the Nicoletti family lived in Rome at the beginning of the sixteenth century.”

Fabiola leaned her elbows on the table. “Yes, and the man I know is not only one of Teodoro Nicoletti’s direct descendants, he’s an eldest son, also, and in line to inherit his family’s legacy.”

The librarian leafed through the old book. “This is a volume about Perugia families. Ah, here’s a section about a branch of Nicolettis.”

Fabiola leaned closer. “That could be the forefather of the man I’ve been in contact with.”

“Probably.” Silvia slid the book closer for Fabiola to see. “It says here the couple had many children, but most of them died from tuberculosis. They did, however, have a son and a daughter who lived to adulthood. My guess is the man you’re talking about is one of the son’s descendants since he carries the same name.
